We've had a phenomenal (though exhausting) week surveying hicatee in Cox Lagoon. We captured 49 hicatee, 2 Mexican Giant Musk #Turtles ('loggerheads') and 1 Mesoamerican Slider ('bokatura'), and we attached Sonotronics, Inc. acoustic transmitters to 30 individuals. #conservation

Is there a better way to spend a Friday afternoon than freediving in a clear(ish) tropical river catching critically endangered #turtles ? I doubt it. We caught 5 Hicatee and 1 Mesoamerican Slider. Not a bad day in the office. #Research #Conservation #Belize

We ended up rescuing a critically endangered Hicatee (Central American River #Turtle ) and 124 large fish (7 species) from a drying puddle today! The puddle was created when an ill-conceived logging road was put in at our site. They bulldozed in the creek feeding the lagoon... 1/4

2023 was a crazy year.
