What could we do to make work pay off for more Americans? This week on andrewyang.com/podcast I discuss with Adam Chandler author of the new book “99% Perspiration: A New Working History of the American Way of Life” including how other countries make work less all-consuming.
*Loved* getting to talk about work, life in creative fields, and unions with Adam Conover.
I'm honored that 99% PERSPIRATION is a Next Big Idea Club January must-read pick. nextbigideaclub.com/magazine/work-…
Next Big Idea Club Some relevant data from the book: "Immigrants are 80% more likely to start a business than native-born Americans. Immigrants pay $1.38 in taxes for every $1 of government benefits they use. Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022."
“But in America, the answer is always more America. Rather than address how obstacles have become insurmountable, we’ve trained much of our collective focus on tie power of individuals to overcome them.” Adam Chandler hitting the nail on the gosh darn head. Ugh.
I finished Adam Chandler ‘s book today at lunch and I liked it so much! It synthesized many of my own thoughts about labor and the nature of work in America (in much snappier prose) and was really well written. Fellow labor historians/nerds - add this one to your list!
Really loved having this conversation with Emily Peck. ⬇️
I also got to meet to H Mart fanatics around the country, go deep in grocery TikTok, and eat my bodyweight in honey butter potato chips and japchae. Thank you to Danielle Sacks for putting up with me!

For Sherwood News, I wrote about how chains like Dutch Bros Coffee and 7 Brew Coffee are exploding and challenging Starbucks not by focusing on highbrow craft, but by adding protein, lots of caffeine, and less precious vibes to the mix. sherwood.news/business/brois…

Excited to share my Businessweek piece about Crumbl! I ate 1000-calorie cookies, interviewed the CEO minutes before a huge layoff, and spoke to franchisees + workers about what gets lost in translation (and sanity) when a very online brand lives in the real world. bloomberg.com/news/features/…
McDonald’s U.S. is finally launching the Big Arch, a $9+ half-pound burger. For Sherwood News, I wrote about the uncanny connections between the Big Arch and the Arch Deluxe (McD’s biggest-ever flop) as well as the bifurcating U.S. economy. sherwood.news/business/mcdon…
