#1/3: MA Gov. Healey, in her State of the State address tonight promised to bolster primary care in MA. Earlier, the state’s Health Policy Commission warned in a new report that the # of PCPs in MA is shrinking and doctor’s offices are shouldering a “high administrative burden.”

Wayne Altman (@drwaynealtman) 's Twitter Profile Photo

#2/3: That means patients turn elsewhere for care. Per a 2023 survey, 2/3 of those who went to an ER for a “nonemergency condition” did so because they couldn’t get an appt w/their PCP. Healey promised to “shift healthcare resources to the front lines,” to grow the PC workforce.

#3/3: “It’s hard just to get an appointment. It’s really frustrating, isn’t it? It’s also unacceptable,” she said. “I want to build a whole army of PCPs, so when you call for an appt, you’re actually going to get one.”

Medicare physician payments have been cut five consecutive years and, when adjusted for inflation, have been reduced more than 30% over the past 20 years. These cuts are a major driver of: ^ declining access to primary care ^ loss of independent physician practices ^
