I never cease to marvel at the way the writings of John Wesley are saturated with scripture. He constantly and consistently weaves threads from any number of biblical texts together into a magnificent and unified vision of the work of the triune God. Simply remarkable.

The Wesleyan tradition was established by two highly educated brothers - one who taught Greek and logic at Oxford! The Wesleys read widely, and quoted poets, church fathers, and ancient philosophers with ease. Anti-intellectualism has no place within authentic Wesleyanism.

What makes you stronger - lifting MORE weights or lifting LESS weights? What makes you more educated - submitting to MORE demanding classes or to LESS demanding classes? Comfort is rarely the means to get better at anything.

New Testament teaching was for the church. Paul didn’t expect Nero to behave like a Christian. But they did expect Christians not to behave like Nero.

The idea that Wesley’s lay preachers were uneducated but pious simpletons is an historical farce. They were expected to be well-read in everything from the church fathers to contemporary science and open to life-long learning. Education was something they embraced.
