Not many people know that HM Coastguard also has search-and-rescue responsibilities for some inland waters.

This includes Windermere and Derwentwater in the Lake District, where Coastguards trained last weekend alongside Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service.

Flooding overnight has led to evacuations in Sussex and Hampshire.

HM Coastguard is working around the clock to assist the emergency response.

We are urging the public to remain safe by understanding the dangers posed by extreme weather.

Many beaches around the UK will have signs indicating which part of the beach you are closest to.

They are exceptionally helpful when we need to locate a casualty.

In an emergency, call 999, ask for the Coastguard and quote the number presented on the sign.
