It's not only that this "we're going to sequence our way into figuring out biology" stuff is harmful to science it's that any "we're going to figure out biology using this one approach" is harmful. Massively multidisciplinary research is the only way to figure out biology

Academic math is underpaying and demoting a faculty member and making life so difficult that she finally leaves… then taking credit when she wins the Nobel.

What I am learning after teaching at several institutions is that my biomedical science training at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville | SIUE was truly exceptional. Kudos to the faculty in the bio department. Great value and a great education.

I had my upper elective students give poster presentations on the utility of Drosophila as a disease model today. Personality encouraged. Here are some of the tag lines: "DROSOPHILA: The Miracle Bug!" "Where small flies lead to big discoveries" "Drosophila: ballin' on a budget"

Gearing up for a Dr. Tina Tootle lab takeover at #TAGC24! Two of my lab members, Ashley & Anna will be giving posters Thursday evening & I will be giving a talk on Saturday evening. Come & learn all about flies, prostaglandins, actin, & the nucleolus. Can’t wait to see you there!

For my intro bio class, I would like to include words of wisdom before each day of class. Who has inspiring (and entertaining) quotes from advisors? #TAGC24 I will go first: “It will either go great, or it will be over.” -Dr. Tina Tootle (helpful for pre-talk jitters)

Talked about the state of genetics and women’s college basketball with our Lyft driver on the way to the airport. Five stars, sir. #TAGC24

As a former UI postdoc, keep holding feet to the fire. This game of treating employees as students only when it’s convenient for administration is exhausting. Stop charging some of your most vulnerable people and reduce your administrative costs.

If you're thinking about going on the faculty job market, take a look at this advice doc I just shared with helpimascientist.com: I collected my thoughts about the whole dang thing, from finding positions to negotiating a contract, & I hope y'all find it helpful!
