Covid (UC San Francisco) Chronicles, Day 1371
I haven’t X'ed much about Covid lately, mostly because things are fairly stable. But a lot of folks have asked me what I’m doing, Covid-wise.
So today: how I’m acting, & why. Graphic below shows my general approach; more details follow. (1/25)

COVID cases going up...expected but still something to pay attention to! adults are the ones most likely to get hospitalized. For more on current state of things (there's flu & RSV out there too), I rec Katelyn Jetelina's update yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/state-of-aff…

🧵 LOTS of folks with in my text messages this week for the first time in months, & many of my friends are saying the same. This has happened before every recognized 🇺🇸 surge. Be careful, esp if you are higher risk. All, please 😷 & test if you feel sick. 1/

More on covid boosters. I haven't changed my stance: important for those who are older/frailer/at high risk, marginal absolute benefit for everyone else. If you want to avoid covid, masks & ventilation are what works.

This is big, folks. The The White House is supporting next generation—nasal and variant-proof Covid vaccines —and therapies with a $5 billion program washingtonpost.com/health/2023/04… by Dan Diamond
Thanks to the relentless efforts of Ashish K. Jha, MD, MPH and White House COVID-19 Response Team👍

Interesting study using data from the Netherlands.

After 6 months:
- all people who were initially off sick flu-like symptoms had returned to work.
- 2% of those off with Covid were still off sick.
- 7% of those sick with Alpha variant (ie pre-vaccination) were still off sick

A classic mode of undermining public health is to misrepresent it as a matter of individual behavior rather than as necessarily collective and shaped by policy choices like paid sick leave, universal healthcare, ventilation standards, etc. Case in point: news.google.com/articles/CBMiO…
