Is medical leadership in Canada today A form of medical volunteerism? Many jobs seem under appreciated both emotionally and financially.

Most leaders value loyalty. Great leaders put a higher premium on integrity. Loyalty is allegiance to power. You're expected to show deference and follow orders. Integrity is allegiance to principles. You're expected to challenge orders that violate your mission or values.

Screaming at employees doesn't make you a tough boss. It makes you an asshole. Great leaders are demanding, not demeaning. They set high expectations and create accountability without abuse. Yelling is unprofessional. Treating people with dignity is not optional—it's required.

The ideal end of an argument isn't always “I agree.” It’s often “I see where you're coming from." Healthy disagreement isn't about one person being right. It's about both people feeling understood. The test of a good fight is whether insight is gained and respect is maintained.

The hallmark of expertise is no longer how much you know. It's how well you synthesize. Information scarcity rewarded knowledge acquisition. Information abundance requires pattern recognition. It's not enough to collect facts. The future belongs to those who connect dots.

Same goes for clinical reasoning in medicine. Important to anticipate what you are going to do with results of a test before you order it. If you don’t know what you’ll do with each possible outcome, perhaps it’s time to revisit your decision and consider if it is the right test.

The "next play" philosophy from Duke's Coach K. This has been a game changer for me in my own life. “Essentially, what it means is that what you have just done is not nearly as important as what you are doing right now." Coach K Advanced Performance newsobserver.com/sports/college…

Emotion regulation is not about ignoring or suppressing feelings. It's about reflecting before reacting. Emotions are clues to values and interests. They should inform decisions, not dictate them. Choosing not to act on everything you feel is a mark of emotional intelligence.

Anyone from Illinois knows Gov. Pritzker is the real deal. This speech he gave at Northwestern’s graduation, where he reminded folks that the best way to spot an idiot is to spot the person who is the most cruel, is worth rewatching and sharing.

So true. Reminds me of the Jack Layton’s final public words: Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world Never more true than today.

Medicine will take your patience, your sleepless nights, your gentlest words—again and again, without asking if you have anything left to give. And when you finally come home, the ones who love you most will be left holding the hollowed-out versions of who you used to be.
