Before you assume someone is rude, make room for the possibility that they might be struggling with anxiety. Before you label someone as lazy, hold space for the possibility that they might be experiencing depression. A reminder that not everything is always as it appears.

If it was your family’s narrative to keep mental health struggles a secret, you may find it difficult to speak about yours.

A reminder during #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth that while 1 in 5 people live with a mental health condition, 5 in 5 people have mental health. We need to be talking more about mental health because mental health is part of us all. 💚

A gentle reminder that many of our unhealthier coping skills served a purpose at one point in our lives. You are more than the way you coped when you were living in survival mode.

Romantic relationships aren’t the only things we can break up with. It’s okay to break up with unhealthy family dynamics. It’s okay to break up with toxic or abusive work environments. It’s okay to break up with one-sided or unreciprocated friendships.

Depression doesn’t need a reason. Anxiety doesn’t listen to logic. Trauma doesn’t acknowledge how much time has passed. OCD doesn’t care about probabilities. A gentle reminder that mental health struggles don’t have to “make sense” for them to still be real and valid.

Dwelling on the past will not change the past. But it will make us feel discouraged & helpless. Worrying about the future will not determine how events unfold. But it will make us feel anxious & distressed. The only place we have real control is in the present moment.

Let’s treat mental and physical health equally for school absences. Let’s treat mental and physical health equally for taking time off from work. Let’s create a society where mental health days are normalized, protected and valid.

Check in with your friends. The ones that seem happy and the ones that seem sad. The ones who are outgoing and the ones who are on the quieter side. The ones who are excelling and the ones who are struggling. We all need to be checked in with from time to time.

That depression is just bad chemistry. In most cases, depression is the result of a combination of biological, environmental and psychological circumstances. The narrative that depression is solely based on chemical "imbalances" is outdated and without merit.
