For me, this was one of the defining moments of the Queen’s reign. 2011. The first British monarch to visit Ireland in 100 years. And she did this. “President, and friends,” she says, in Irish, to the visible astonishment of Mary McAleese. Still gives me goosebumps today.

Language teacher life is going on your honeymoon to a country where you don’t know the language so you write key verbs and nouns and then find yourself looking up the word for knife so you can ask for one to cut the tostas 😂 #mfl

Unlocked foreign language learning goals today! Went to Toledo for a day trip and ordered menú del dia for lunch and when I asked what something was (in clearly basic Spanish) the guy asked me if I spoke French or Italian, and I said italian! He didn’t even think I was Aussie!

Language learner life is trying to be polite and saying “señora” to get your waitress’ attention, only to be told off for using it and then being told to use “chica” 😂

Language (and life) wins is going on your honeymoon and having a husband who knows to not talk until you’ve attempted to speak in Spanish to order drinks, so you don’t get told you “have to order food with your drinks”, like everyone else who ordered in English did.

Language teacher/learner life is being the person who asks where the bathroom is or for the bill because ✨practising the language✨ is as exciting as being on holiday itself

A useful questionnaire you can administer to your students to (1) gain an insight as to how they go about reading and (2) to enhance their metacognition vis-a-vis reading. Especially useful with your year 10 students.
