Junior Doctor parents: *Unpaid parental leave* is a thing worth knowing about. Up to 4 weeks off/yr (total of 18 until the child is 18) This is a statutory right but the timing of the leave needs to be negotiated with your employer

For quite a while people outside ED have looked in & said - ‘the patients could go elsewhere’ The staff in ED have been pretty confident that these are ED patients & just need flow and staffing to meet the patient need -it appears they were right! hsj.co.uk/emergency-care…

The practice of coordinating, consulting and managing an entire acute clinical service in real-time is fairly unique to emergency medicine. Central to this is the EPiC (or emergency physician in charge) role #FOAMed Saint Emlyn's with @codingbrown stemlynsblog.org/an-epic-mental…

A&E attendance for children 0-4 years ⬆️42% in last 10 yrs - mostly for minor illnesses, feeding probs, infant crying previously managed by health visitors🚨👶🏿👶🏼👶🏾 Cutting health visitors by ⬆️40% over the same period has been a false economy 🚨 ihv.org.uk/news-and-views…

Maybe all ED staff ought to spend a bit of time in 'civilian' clothes sitting in the ED waiting room. It is miserable being an ED patient at the moment - but there are some low cost things that could be provided that would make it more bearable - free tea? emj.bmj.com/content/early/…

Wow Hampshire Hospitals Charity thank you so much for our new toys to distract and improve children’s care when attending our Winchester Children’s Emergency Area! They are so much fun and the children absolutely love them, those in resus will certainly prefer looking at the ceiling now!

Important study in Emergency Medicine Journal this month: reducing noise in a Dutch ED improved not just staff wellbeing but also productivity. This can probably be generalised to acute medical units. SAM Online emj.bmj.com/content/41/9/5…

Disrespect doesn’t just make people feel bad. It leads them to perform worse. Evidence from medical teams: Even a single insult decreases the quality of diagnoses and procedures. Rudeness disrupts focus and undermines collaboration. Civility is not optional. It’s vital.

NHS short staffing is associated with at least 4,000 extra deaths annually, shown in Cambridge University Hospitals NHS and University of Surrey The BMJ research. High staff turnover and reliance on agency workers are leading to severe consequences, especially in A&Es. There is an urgent need for a stable

People with minor conditions take minutes to treat or redirect. Are not the cause of the current collapse of emergency care. Hospitals that try deflecting minor patients just don’t get the root cause of the problem. Not understanding the root cause = no chance of improvement.
