So my first book came out a while ago! It's so exciting and scary to tweet about it 🙈😱 In it, I position political apologies as inherently gendered and show how state actors both highlight and obscure accounts of victimhood following instances conflict-related sexual violence

Kara-Murza's 25 year prison sentence apparently isn't draconian enough: the Russian Duma just adopted a bill that introduces life imprisonment for treason.

The irony: Russia tries to promote RuTube but for the platform to become economically viable (i.e., to be able to pay content producers!) it runs ads. YouTube, meanwhile, has disabled both ads and monetisation in Russia. Result: users stay on YouTube. Desperate RuTube removes ads

Just seen that the Handbook on the Politics of Memory has just been published. It looks great! I have a chapter on the contradictions of conservative representations of the British Empire.... I hope you check it out!

Yesterday afternoon Meduza obtained the instructions for how Russian media should cover the drone attack on Moscow, so I checked to see their implementation in last night's Vremya. All four prescribed lines are covered within the first item. meduza.io/news/2023/05/3…

Really enjoyed hearing @h_k_richards talking about her research looking at human rights in British military courts. Fascinating storytelling through photographs to expose the 'weirdness'. Great to join so many Cardiff University Politics and IR colleagues there too! #BISA2023

Two fantastic back to back round tables at #BISA2023 this morning on ‘Responding to outrage’ and ‘Methodological approaches to race and gender logics in the British Army’. Insightful and nuanced conversations that gave me lots to think about. Thanks speakers!

'Poem about a Crow' by Victoria Amelina, inspired by her work interviewing women who lived through occupation. She was writing a book on women's experiences of the war. Another Ukrainian book that will never be finished because of Russian bombs & bullets. 2/2

I see 'Captain Tom' is back in the news, so here is my colleague and I's attempt to make sense of the changing resonance and significance of the Captain Tom phenomenon both during the pandemic and beyond. academic.oup.com/isagsq/article…

It was a joy to share some of this work in my presentation ‘The Art of War: Discovering Discomfort/Discomforting Discoveries’ in the incredible BISA - British International Studies Association panel, ‘Arts, theatre and war: intimate politics, affective discomforts and 'messy’ revelations’ convened by @NatashaDanilova.

This book is absolutely terrifying. The amount of detail on how limited decision and response times are, the sheer speed with which nuclear escalation can occur, and the devastating consequences leaves you stunned. Nuclear weapons are not military instruments but sheer madness.
