Thank you to .@AutisticNW for a very important survey regarding the autistic community. Let’s talk about employment for autistic people. Autistic people were asked whether they 1. Struggle with finding employment 2. Struggle with retaining employment 1/6

We understand that it can be hard for parents of autistic kids to get authentic information about autism. When a child gets an autism diagnosis, parents are inundated with tons of information from professionals. We can help give you a foundation through coaching. #DoveOrchids

Changing out fluorescent light bulbs with LEDs or other lighting can help both autistic people with light sensitivity, and autistic people with sound sensitivity! Fluorescent lighting can emit high frequency noise - a lot of autistic people can hear electricity! #DoveOrchids

Dove Orchids Yesssss. Noise from fluorescent bulbs is very distracting. Besides, LED bulbs can usually be adjusted for brightness as well, so besides being quiet they’re also very convenient.

Consider others when using strongly scented perfume, deodorant, or other strongly scented products. Many autistic people are sensitive to smells and scents can be very overpowering, distracting, or even painful. Some people can even be allergic to certain chemicals. #DoveOrchids

I can very nearly have a total meltdown when I encounter overpowering perfume or aftershave. It feels like a thousand hornets angrily buzzing around inside me, making me agitated and it begins to trigger my fight or flight response so that I just want to run away and hide.

It’s important to remember that not everyone wants to communicate in person or on a video meeting. Consider what the default is in communication and make other options available for the people you communicate with. #DoveOrchids

If someone has headphones on, don’t assume that they don’t want to engage or that they’re not paying attention. Many autistic people wear ear protection for sound sensitivity. #DoveOrchids

I genuinely thought I was one of the only people who could hear electricity, didn't know this is a common problem. It does help in my work as an electrician though, even if it kinda hurts hearing it.

Part of the reason I’m doing it now is because the professional implications of BEING autistic don’t just magically go away when people don’t know about it.

It's important to remember that "the real world" should also be inclusive of disabled people and allow for accommodations! Disabled people shouldn't only get accommodations until they hit 18 years old.. Disabled adults exist.
