The best antidote to burnout is not teaching people coping skills to handle stress. It's redesigning work to reduce stress.

The cure for exhaustion is removing overwhelming demands and the norm of self-sacrifice.

Healthy workplaces value well-being as much as performance.

So if Walmart can’t make healthcare profitable, maybe we should consider medicine differently than retail? 🤔

I know patients have scanxiety but so do oncologists. Every time I open a new scan report of a patient on surveillance, I hold my breath and leap with joy when I read “no findings of locally recurrent or metastatic disease”.

Female physicians are typically expected to take more time with patients, demonstrate more empathy, listen more.

We need to stop talking about this emphasis on communication as making female doctors “less efficient” and acknowledge the fact that it makes patients safer.

For those applying to fellowship this cycle, do your best & even so:

You are more than a fellowship application. More than a personal statement. More than what your letters of rec say about you.

Going for a walk today is a gift to your future self. So is eating a bowl of blueberries, lifting weights, learning a new skill, and pushing through that hard task you don’t want to do.

Keep giving gifts to your future self.

The doc nodded, “Being here is the heart of medicine Joe. Just being there, in the moment for people, it’s 90% of what I do. Thanks for letting me be here for you.”

Joe nodded with a smile and fell silent.

The two men sat, and looked together towards the distant horizon. 22/

I’m working on a keynote speech while my husband does the dishes…

I’m utterly convinced that one of the biggest predictors of career success (especially as a woman in medicine) is who you marry and how much work at home they’re willing to share.

From The Athletic: Indiana Fever's general manager said it took “20 seconds, maybe 15” to make Caitlin Clark their choice. The average sold price for Fever tickets has already increased 190%. nyti.ms/3Ugn0Nw

May each doorframe be our reminder:

I'm entering a room with a human being,
who is counting on me to present.
Counting on me to pay attention.
Counting on me to care.

Self-doubt stops too many women from applying for jobs.

After clearing the bar for expert-level work, 92% of men applied—but only 50% of women did.

It shouldn't matter whether you feel qualified. That's for the employer to judge. If you're interested, put your hat in the ring.

PRO TIP: if you’re a doctor stuck inside for the eclipse you can still experience 4 minutes of total darkness by scheduling a peer review call with a colleague outside your specialty who denies one of your patients the treatment they need
