This is what forward-thinking cities are doing with their busiest streets. It’s about creating more freedom for more people to move more easily around the city. And it’s VERY good for business.

Today, cities sink millions of dollars into public investments before securing any taxable private wealth to fund them. This is a risk we can’t keep taking on. Before the Suburban Experiment, private investment would justify public investment, which secured long-term stability.

YIMBYLAND If only they could remove those highways. There is something about highways that reminds me of vines, choking the life out of a tree.

How can we make housing more affordable? Or downtowns more walkable? Neighborhood streets safe and accessible? Cities economically productive and resilient so they can fund services and infrastructure? Here are a few ideas to share with fellow residents and public officials! 1/2

How about this: if someone is good enough to mow your lawn or tar your roof or clean your house or be a nanny to your kids, they're good enough to be your neighbor.

E-bike rebate programs are terrific -- for the planet, for health, and for cities. People love them. As I wrote last month in Bloomberg CityLab, we should be *planning* for a huge response when a new one launches. Distribute as many vouchers as you can! bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people. Sound efficient? HT Ellen MacArthur Foundation

We should start by banning setbacks, the ubiquitous mandates that all homes reserve space in front for a decorative front lawn to begin with. It’s not just a water issue, it also increases the cost of housing and the usefulness of homes.

Inspired tonight at a community meeting. I heard, “I never see anyone biking” [so we don’t need bike infra] & a woman spoke up, “we aren’t building for today, we are building for the future”. This was echoed by others. I’ve a feeling I’m not in #CoralGables anymore. #safestreets

According to AARP, biggest impediment to mobility of “old people” is driving mandates/car dependence. Driving mandates dramatically reduce accessibility & impede safety for the elderly. We need more news columnists who aren’t hiding their biases behind fake concerns.
