The NIH is a misnomer. It is really the National Institutes of Medical Research, dedicated to the cause and cure of disease. For good health, look to consumer education and protection, life style and health care.

NIH is centralizing peer review of all applications for grants, cooperative agreements and research and development contracts within the agency’s Previously the NIH Center for Scientific Review. This is expected to save NIH more than $65 million annually & make the review process more efficient.

A worry: prolonged disruptions and uncertainty in NIH funding stability will reduce patient participation in clinical trials. As a participant, I would personally have apprehension towards any publicly funded studies as it seems they could be terminated with little forewarning.

Very sad to hear that UMass is rescinding all PhD admissions for Fall 2025. This means there will be no new PhD cohort, and UMass will not have a graduating class that year. This is just unprecedented and I am so very sorry for all the affected students.
