So what's happening with medical research in the US? This is the cumulative award count from the NIH for the year. Doesn't look so good. But it gets worse. 1/

Calling all pulmonologists! Wondering what to make of PGD, BLAD, ALAD, ACR, AMR, and CLAD? Consider attending a critical pre-conference @ATS course on Updates in Lung Transplantation: ats2025.d365.events/directory/sess… #ATS2025

The NIH is a misnomer. It is really the National Institutes of Medical Research, dedicated to the cause and cure of disease. For good health, look to consumer education and protection, life style and health care.

NIH is centralizing peer review of all applications for grants, cooperative agreements and research and development contracts within the agency’s Previously the NIH Center for Scientific Review. This is expected to save NIH more than $65 million annually & make the review process more efficient.

A worry: prolonged disruptions and uncertainty in NIH funding stability will reduce patient participation in clinical trials. As a participant, I would personally have apprehension towards any publicly funded studies as it seems they could be terminated with little forewarning.

Very sad to hear that UMass is rescinding all PhD admissions for Fall 2025. This means there will be no new PhD cohort, and UMass will not have a graduating class that year. This is just unprecedented and I am so very sorry for all the affected students.

Lung transplant recipients suffer from high rates of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). Identifying those at risk for CLAD is a major priority. Today in Science Advances, @Sajadmoshkelgo1 describes a T cell population appearing before CLAD science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… 1/

Excellent article on economic impacts of cutting US scientific funding The New York Times. Great example of how the study of something seemingly superfluous (microorganisms in Yellowstone hot springs) led to a vitally important breakthrough (Taq DNA polymerase). nytimes.com/2025/03/31/bus…

Proud of the congressional leadership in California for leading the way to reform access to oxygen for patients with advanced lung disease. We need better access to liquid oxygen now. Rep.
