New teachers, keep an eye out for red flags as you connect with colleagues: 🚩Brags about yelling at students 🚩“I don’t give out A’s in MY class” 🚩Rolls their eyes at everything the principal says 🚩Instantly wants to give you negative intel about your roster What else?

I tell kids to "curate their critics": to create a list of 4 to 5 people they respect who also understand them & root for them. If someone on that list offers feedback, they should take it to heart. Otherwise, others' opinions should not alter their self-concept or their actions.

I always had one in my classroom and now keep a small one in my office for students who just need a quiet spot to calm down.

If a student turns something in late, it doesn’t mean the student has less understanding of the content, assignments turned in on time doesn’t mean the student knows the content more. If a student learns should be more important than “when.”

Building relationships doesn't just help with behavior in the classroom, but students also work harder for teachers they like and respect. Relationships before rigor.

Introverts drain too fast. That's why they don't connect with everybody. They want to, but they need time. To observe. To assess. To trust. To dive deep and connect right. They're not closed off, they just want someone that matters. That feels true to their soul. That's all.
