12 yrs in the making - now there is no guidance from The City of Edinburgh Council or clarity on the readiness of the national system to administer the Visitor Levy. The signs are already there that the scheme will descend into chaos. scottishbusiness.news/dissenting-voi… Tom Arthur Kate Forbes MSP

EVERY Scot needing accommodation in Scotland /Edinburgh will pay this tax on a tax (that then gets taxed) with some of the highest VAT rates anywhere in Europe already imposed on local biz. Another nail in the coffin for one of the few success stories left in Scotland. #SaveSC

Dickins Edinburgh Put too much administrative/tax burden on businesses and they cease to exist: ST License costs, higher non-domestic rates/utilities/NI/MW/VL on top of high VAT and higher tax burden in Scotland. Scotland is bonnie but people won't come if its too expensive, will go elsewhere.

Things I didn’t think when I sat down at my desk this morning……. How about a 5% plus VAT (so 6%) visitor tax for anyone having the impertinence to pay to stay in Edinburgh. That’s going to make us so competitive as a destination. Make visitors feel so welcome at the same time.

Things I didn’t think this morning as I sat down at my desk…… Over the past 27 years as I created and have grown and nurtured my business whilst striving for excellence and offering employment and benefit for the economy, my governments have had my back. Sad but very true.

In Edinburgh, it feels like people who make decisions for the city have taken us back to pre Roman times. Longing for such wisdom today.

Things I didn’t think when I sat down at my desk this morning….. Paul McLennan, our Housing Minister, great guy. #thingsididntthink

Under @edinburgh_CC's watch it's axed huge No's of city self caterers to appease a noisy wee lobby, while presiding over an explosion in a previously non-existent & deeply unsafe black market it does not police edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh… #SaveSC

We introduced legislation allowing councils to control and manage short-term lets, ensuring: ✔️ Fairer access to housing ✔️ Stronger protections for communities ✔️ Better standards for renters and owners

The SNP ❌ Thousands of B&Bs now shut ❌ Highest hotel rates on planet (Edinburgh) ❌ 3 failed legal challenges ❌120 business now fighting the council ❌ Housing crisis not fixed ❌ No systemic H&S issue to be fixed ❌ 15% redn in Self Catering nationally ❌ Sky high license cost

Trying to claim the STL legislation as a success is truly trying to pull the wool over the eyes of Scotland. The scheme is a mess with so many unresolved issues. The SNP need to claim this as a success seems to be clouding their ability to acknowledge the many outstanding

And the Cockburn Association can take responsibility for their part in this. They called for tough licensing and that was always only going to make prices rise not fall.

This beggars belief. The City of Edinburgh Council The haters were so happy for all the applicants details to be public too. Oh the irony when they need to share their own…..

Is this best practice? Success? Fair? Or just bloody outrageous? Edinburgh’s #VisitorLevy starts 1 Oct – but there’s still: ❌ No guidance ❌ No VAT clarity ❌ No exemptions ❌ No comms plan ❌ No portal til 2026 #TourismPolicy #ASSC #FairTourism ASSC News ST Alliance

The tourist levy is actually a tax on everyone & now it seems it's an excuse for opportunists to fleece locals & visitors alike. Bill + VAT + Tip + Levy + VAT + MadeUp% = TOO MUCH #SaveSC #touristtax #visitorlevy #touristlevy
