I am trying to build a house & am pleased that the heat engineering assessment has scored it B (90) for energy efficiency & A for Co2 emissions impact 🙂 Scottish Ministers should be very pleased. However, the new build heat standard has stopped all my plans in their tracks 1/7

Important context to the debate about the benefits, or otherwise, of banning biomass in new builds 👇

The wider point is that well managed woodland at a domestic scale is a low carbon heat source and sustainable.

The region also has significantly lower PM2.5 (particulate matter) emissions than say, the central belt.

When Scottish Crofting Federation Andy Wightman Jamie McIntyre & others, who believe in sustainable, environmentally friendly heating options are expressing concerns and confusion about the proposals for wood burning stoves (in new builds only) in rural areas, I think it merits listening.

“Woodburning stoves can still be installed, where a need can be justified.” Assuming that includes power outages and fuel poverty, then that hopefully will reassure people who are about to start newbuilds, including self-builds, that their original plans don’t need altered.

This has just been brought to my attention by more than a few concerned Highlanders who heat their homes (as thousands do) using woodburning stoves, especially older residents who rely on them during a time of crippling energy price rises. I’m seeking urgent clarification.
