2 months ago, an article in the The New York Times tried to get at why apartment buildings in the U.S. are so large, and so incredible bland. Posited modulation, design review, cheap materials. It's none of those. It's our building code. Us, in The Architect's Newspaper: archpaper.com/2023/03/why-do…

Danielle Smith in 2013: "I think that you would find that people are reluctant to support a proposal where middle-class taxpayers see a portion of their dollars that would go to support franchises where you do have millionaire players and billionaire owners" #ableg #abpoli #yyc

Under the old arena deal, taxpayers paid half and got most of the money back. Under the new deal, taxpayers double the overall money we put in, now pay 75%, and get no money back. The new arena deal is very not good. #yyccc #abpoli

Rachel Notley asked for my expert opinion on Alberta's fiscal policies. And her team accepted ALL EIGHT of my recommendations. In case you missed them, here there are. Share them with your friends and family members who are considering how to vote.

What would Peter Lougheed do in this election? Vote NDP, most likely. That's a reflection of both Rachel Notley's more conservative brand of progressive politics -- and Danielle Smith's un-conservative views and values. #cdnpoli #ableg nationalobserver.com/2023/05/04/opi…

Resubmission from Reserve Properties, Westdale & IBI Group at 77 Roehampton. Project looks good, but this developer's doubling down on appalling elevator service continues unabated: 4 cabs for 624 units here. This will only get worse until elevators are put into the code. oaarchitects

Doug Griffiths (@Doug13Ways) is probably the most honourable and principled politician I've ever met. This endorsement carries a LOT of weight for me.

The most expensive housing forms happen with no oversight or input but any new multifamily housing goes through years of review, consultation, reports etc. Why does the least sustainable, least affordable, least tax efficient form of housing get the ‘advance to go and collect’?

When you add the #ableg and #yyccc cash to the tax paid by ticket purchasers, that means: The public is funding 97% of the new arena. Flames ownership will cover 3% of costs for 100% of profits. This is the biggest wealth transfer from public to private hands in city history.
