Geo-#Dakar2023 - stage 4. It may be hard to imagine, but during the Pleistocene ice ages of the last few hundred thousand years, Arabia was green! Today, the race will come close to Jubbah, where Pleistocene lake sediments have told us a lot about the lost savannah's of Arabia!

A late MIS 5 (about 85 thousand years ago) palaeolake in the Nefud Desert (site 16.3). Stone tools and animal fossils were found in association.

Come listen to me talking about how we can move from predicting where known past routes might have been to explaining why they are where they are Thanks to DAH Lab for the opportunity to share my PhD research!

For some reason, around seven thousand years ago nomadic pastoralists in northern Arabia began to construct a new kind of ritual stone structure, that we now call the mustatil (rectangle in Arabic). Over 1500 of these were built, sometimes vast (over 600 m long).

#FieldworkFriday and @FlintFriday. This time ten years ago, I was having a good time at Mundafan in southern Saudi Arabia. 85,000 year old stone tools on the edge of what once been a large lake.

#FieldworkFriday. Working out the age of an ancient lake in northern Arabia using optically stimulated luminescence dating. Dr Paul S. Breeze in action with the gamma spectrometer (an important piece of kit for accurate OSL dating).

#fieldworkfriday. From one of our trips exploring the stunning landscapes of northern Arabia for new archaeological sites and records of past climate. We sometimes do hours of off-road driving on these recces, but they almost always end in a cool discovery! هيئة التراث
