Dutch cities *really* like putting their tram tracks on grass. And it’s not just the bigger metropolitan areas. Here’s the scene in Schiedam; population 80,000. Dedicated right-of-way. Less asphalt. Better stormwater infiltration and sound absorption. Seems like a win-win to us!

If one image sums up our first few months in the Netherlands, it’s this. A society that—over decades—has shaped its infrastructure, policy, and culture to prioritize humans over motor vehicles. We haven’t once felt uncomfortable or unsafe on a bike. We might just stay forever.

Five years ago today, we put a name on the unpaid advocacy work we were doing, and launched Modacity into the world. The business model was always a challenge, but we got paid in the most incredible experiences, and are now living our dream in Delft. What a wild ride it’s been!

It sure is nice to live in a place where the streets, laws, and people encourage our heathy behaviour, rather than admonish it. A totally unscripted moment captured by our 12-year-old daughter while riding to Den Haag this afternoon.

Wasn’t going to get involved until I saw this sarcastic response. That explanation is fine if you also frame things like ‘was attacked by a motorist’ where someone happened to be using a car. Language paints a picture beyond the facts. As BBC, you have a duty to consider that
