Feels insane that a couple of weeks ago we all watched a video of a young man burning to death in a hospital bed and somehow the global diplomatic incident today is about a bunch of racist football hooligans getting a shoeing. What are we doing?

"The lesson he had learnt, that all of us are alone, fighting for ourselves in a world that is daily growing more savage, he would have had to acquire, but at home he would have learnt it gradually, slowly encrusting himself with the gentlemanly protection of English selfishness"

MSF is outraged after an Israeli drone strike almost hit five of our Palestinian and international staff on their way home from Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. As always, the Israeli authorities were notified about our movements and the vehicle was identifiable with an MSF logo.

“….What have I to leave you but the ruins of old courage, and the lore of old gallantry and hope?” Happy 81st birthday, Marilynne Robinson. Every solstice, I return to a 6 min clip of her reading from the end of ‘Gilead’ and I swear I can feel the world turning.

I wonder if S Sebag Montefiore would mind clarifying whether he considers Ireland's opposition to ongoing Israeli war crimes to be part of what he regards as its being "weirdly, unreasonably anti-Israel". Can't imagine he'd want to be ambiguous on this matter

My top four books read in 2024: a walk around the UK in 1982; late C19th Belgian Congo horrors; wild Edwardian aristos; & what becomes of the ageing homosexual ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Maybe it’d be a relief to everyone if we stopped pretending it’s still “Christian” in cases where it’s been utterly co-opted by nationalism, and worse. Christianity is an attempt to be Christlike. It’s a poem, a largeness of thought; a love of existence, not limited to your own.

One of many gifts from Michael Longley. One I treasure all the more, now that he has left us. His death is a great loss for poetry, for Belfast, and for literature on these islands and well beyond. He will be greatly missed. (I write at more length on Insta)

Office debate. Should we refer to teams in the singular or the plural? For example: Lidl-Trek are sponsored by a supermarket and have some canny riders or Lidl-Trek is sponsored by a supermarket and has some canny riders

I want to make one thing clear. I left BBC News (UK) last year after covering Gaza for months because I could see evidence accumulating into the robust conclusion that Israel has been committing war crimes & crimes against humanity. 1/4
