Muhammad is my former coworker at California YIMBY and a pillar of the pro-housing movement. As someone whose family was also forced to flee their country 49 years ago yesterday, I was happy to help his with what I could.

If you can, please do too.

Chris already wrote a really good thread explaining our new paper on what kind of housing policy voters want. For all the YIMBYs I see on the TL pouring themselves a glass of bleach, I'll offer up some thoughts about why things are not as catastrophic as you might imagine.

In 23 of 27 Gallup surveys conducted since 1993, at least 60% of U.S. adults have said there is more crime nationally than there was the year before, despite the downward trend in crime rates during most of that period. pewrsr.ch/4b0tN3A

Out today in AEJ Micro by Charles Angelucci, Julia Cage & Michael Sinkinson

TV rollout in 1944 to 1964 reduced newspaper readership and decimated advertising revenue.

Newspapers responded by reducing content, particularly local news which in turn led to more party vote share congruence.

I introduced myself as a 🇨🇦🇮🇱peace activist. They didn't let me in University of British Columbia

'Do you believe in Palestinian liberation?'
Me: 'of course'
'Do you believe in Palestinian self-determination?'
Me: 'of course - coexisting peacefully with Israel'
'Ok then - this is not the space for you'

People spewing misinformation & conspiracy theories used to be marginalized, and powerful media gatekeepers usually kept them out. Today, we have a front row seat to everyone's opinions on social media, while the news media landscape is fragmented and gatekeepers have less power.

Last night, Ohio State U. officials insisted that of course they would never have rooftop snipers during students' pro-Palestinian protest

Today, they admitted they lied

This in a state where the Ohio National Guard murdered 4 students in 1970, Appalling thelantern.com/2024/04/univer…

This is absolutely insane. Regardless of how you feel about the protests or the war in Gaza, you can’t be for freedom of speech and think this is an appropriate thing to be happening at universities across America.

I just can’t get over framing this clearly positive development as something negative. “Oversupply”? How about meeting the demand?

New preprint w King/Kaphingst. When it comes to discernment for more specialized media (e.g., cancer news) does a more targeted literacy intervention beat a generic one? In this study, health-focused news tips caused undue skepticism of accurate news. osf.io/preprints/osf/…

The worst psychotic disorders in teenage males I have seen in my career as a psychiatrist were in the context of intense cannabis use. Cannabis use and the developing brain do not go well together.
