The academic job market: "look to the person on your left. Now the person on your right. Only none of you will get employed"

Lucy’s job should be more secure – but at Australian universities, labour laws are having the opposite effect theguardian.com/australia-news…

Dr Victoria Nagy (@dr_vnagy) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This is not surprising at all. In fact all too expected. Federal govt needs to get serious in funding universities well. universities in turn have to stop overpaying their VCs & execs & pulling money from teaching for infrastructure. theguardian.com/australia-news…

"Casuals are consistently sold out. We want to plan our lives, but we’re in a situation of constant precarity. It’s exhausting" - Lucy Nicolls The lack of care right now is so incredibly demoralising - really glad to see Caitlin Cassidy giving this the attention it deserves👇🏽

"If we don’t break down the universities’ reliance on a business model that is based on exploitation and promoting insecurity, they will take every twist and turn to avoid having to make fixed term and casual employees ongoing"

“We want permanency, we want to be able to plan our lives, but instead we’re in a situation of constant precarity. It’s exhausting." Lucy from USyd Casuals Network highlights the toll of precarity on the up to 75% of academic staff on insecure contracts theguardian.com/australia-news…

University leaders are using Closing Loopholes laws to make casual staff in #HigherEducation even less secure. We need better management at #universities and Jason Clare MP must fix governance in line with proposals in his Universities Accord. #BetterUnis theguardian.com/australia-news…

When University of Sydney students publicly call a protest to oppose Israel's attacks on Lebanon, uni management threatens them for not 'notifying' them of it, and chucks in some jaw-dropping racism about 'Arabic language' for good measure.

Actually, 'Arabic text'. Nothing is said about what that text actually means: the fact that it's Arabic is all that the university feels it's necessary to cite to substantiate their suspicion that it's 'violent and hateful'. What a disgusting travesty.

BREAKING: It won't. It won't fully fund all public schools. Not even one. Children currently in Tasmanian schools will never have full funding under this new deal between @JeremyRockliff and Anthony Albanese. More to come. #politas #auspol

With a surplus of $15.8 billion, the Federal Government could afford to fully fund public schools 12 times over. No more excuses. Failing to deliver full funding is failing our kids. #auspol Anthony Albanese Jim Chalmers MP Jason Clare MP
