Enough is enough. Australian university staff have now had more than $170 million in wages and entitlements stolen from them. This latest example at JCU adds to the mountain of evidence that we need urgent reform to fix broken a governance model and reduce insecure work.

The threat to punish casual staff for seeking to be paid for the work they have performed demonstrates the urgent need for major changes to universities' broken governance model.

In 2020, the sector’s biggest wage thief, University of Melbourne management, illegally threatened 2 staff who questioned their pay. While it’s pleasing management’s been fined $75K, with >$160m stolen from university staff this behaviour is widespread. Urgent action is required.
