I caught the Lin Sun #OSSummit session on the new Istio "ambient mesh". Avoids the downsides of sidecars which Lin lists, but fewer policy enforcement points means less fine-grained AuthZ. Solution proposed is start with coarse-grained "overlay layer" then add sidecars later
