A quick 🧵on standardisation vs moderation - some thoughts for Heads of Department / those who have responsibility for assessment. Let’s talk about the purpose of each, and ways to carry them out successfully. But let’s also be brief, because ya know, time is limited! 1/-

New blog... Education and the fallout from COVID – the canary in the mine? A very different one. The current state of education (from my perspective). It's not news for those that work in schools but pulls together everything that we're dealing with. missdcoxblog.wordpress.com/2024/03/30/edu…

Pearson The grade statistics for English Language 2.0 are wild. How is this possibly ‘fair and comparable’ between awarding bodies? Boundaries up by 8-14 marks on last year… 80% kids didn’t pass… this doesn’t compare to any other board Ofqual #GCSEResults2024 #teamenglish

When it comes to GCSE and A level English, the assessment system is broken. Unreliable marking, opaque and inconsistently applied mark schemes, shambolic moderation & standardisation procedures, unfair appeals processes. Never mind curriculum revamps. it's time to fix this mess.

There should be at least one Friday a month that is a “read in bed all day” day, where you don’t have to go to work, and you get to just eat snacks in bed with a good book.

What career puts you into 40,000 of debt to learn about the job instead of how to do it and then dumps you into the work environment with the expectation you figure out how to do it by experimenting on clients? Teaching.

This year, be the teacher who… 1. Says no without guilt. 2. Sets boundaries without apology. 3. Speaks up without second guessing. 4. Leads with clarity. 5. Chooses presence over perfection—every time. #Room212

We continue to bemoan 1/3 students graded below 4 in Eng Lang when a. grade boundaries are set for that approx proportion b. Eng Lang GCSE is a poor exam that doesn't test competence in use of lang in a meaningful way c. marking is erratic, so the results aren't even reliable.

The longer I've worked in education, the more apparent it's become: simple, consistent routines, applied with love, regular recognition & praise for getting it right &, when necessary, predictable consequences for not following the rules, has the greatest positive impact overall.
