As a sixth form tutor I reckon I spend at least 6 hours with each applicant individually crafting these statements. I know most will be unread but the pupil and parental expectations are very high and so we feel compelled to 'play the game'.

I was taught that spouses administer the Sacrament of Matrimony one to the other, and that the Priest simply represents the Church and pronounces God's blessing. Perhaps we should just make all couples marry civilly in the register office, and bless them generously afterwards.
