Literacy is civil right. The wakeup call is long overdue. Share this with whomever needs to hear it. Thank you, NAACP, for your leadership. the74million.org/article/naacp-…

It’s been a rough start to the school year in NYC so I’m reposting this. It’s in the application where the learning sticks. I’m seeing lots of 40-min lessons where sts read and write less than 5 words. That doesn’t work. Implementing a flawed program w/ fidelity ensures failure.

Guess what shiny, flashy, novel phonics activity we did today? We didn’t. We made words w magnetic letters & cookie sheets just as we will do 2x/week all year long. Keep routines & materials the same & focus on learning, even if it’s not as exciting to post on social media.

Please don't tell me your teaching methods and materials are culturally relevant, inclusive, or liberatory if they produce illiterate children. Just don't.

"The question now is whether Calkins is so much a part of the problem that she cannot be part of the solution. 'I’m going to figure this out. And I’m going to clarify it or I’m going to write some more or speak or do something or, or—fix it.' But can she? Can anyone?"

We've got an update on legislative changes since Sold a Story. Half of all states have passed new laws since the podcast first came out. Story update by Christopher Peak. apmreports.org/story/2024/11/…

I’m shocked that this needs to be said, but: If you have a student who struggles to read, you should not blame the parents, for not reading enough. Lots of kids with dyslexia struggle to read despite having their parents read to them every day. You don’t know what happens in a
