New Nuffield Trust report into health inequalities faced by women in prison, finding that pregnant women in prison are 2x as likely to go into preterm labour compared to the general population. Preterm labour can lead to death, among other complications. tinyurl.com/84yryx7p

New Safety in Custody Statistics released by HMPPS today show: - There were 288 deaths in prison custody, a decrease of 27% from 395 deaths last year; - Of those deaths, 66 were self-inflicted, a 20% decrease from the 82 self-inflicted deaths last year tinyurl.com/2s4zmren

Today's data also shows a 7% increase in women self-harming in custody. This comes a day after Justice Committee warned of “alarming” 4% increase last year. As our Chair Juliet Lyons urges, more must be done to protect women at risk of self-harm in prison.
