At todays Greater Manchester Police Chief Constables roadshow the Deputy Chief Constable highlighted how the forces work supporting the Armed Forces Covenant was helping us to recruit and retain the best officers of the future. A huge endorsement I felt to our Armed Forces Network. #policing
This week I was honoured to attend Alder Grange School School to watch Veterans In Communities short film ‘Stories in Transition’ with my good friend Steve Butterworth as one of the stars talking about his own struggles. Brilliant film and highlighted the importance of local veterans charities.
Thanks to Chris Hill for hosting our northwest Veterans in custody meeting today. HMP Altcourse HMP Manchester HMPBuckleyHall HMP Risley HMP Forest Bank all represented. Pre custody, in custody & post custody support for veterans discussed & ideas shared. #collaboration
Inspirational morning with Trafford Veterans CIC JP Helliwell policepandaimp Inspector Jim Jones BEM
At the military & blue light veterans breakfast club. Thanks for the invitation
Thoroughly enjoyable morning with High Sheriff, Greater Manchester, JP Helliwell, policepandaimp at Trafford Veterans CIC military & blue light veterans breakfast club. Bumped into a few former colleagues too. Thanks to the team for organising as always. look forward to seeing you at the airport in May
Had an opportunity at the launch of Op Prosper by Rishi Sunak and Rt Hon Johnny Mercer to ask the PM for government to influence the College of Policing over increasing the starting salary in policing for veterans. The current student officer pay is too low for a vet with family & bills
It was great to bump into Fr. Barry Lomax at Greater Manchester Police Sedgley Park training college yesterday. Such a positive influence on everyone, he even sits on our Supporting Our Armed Forces steering group. Thanks for all you do Father.
Yesterday I presented to Greater Manchester Police Custody Sgts on the vital role they play identifying & reaching out to vulnerable military veterans. The veteran may have been arrested but in many cases it’s a crime linked to substance misuse stemming from poor mental health #MakingADifference
For my network from HM Armed Forces, if you still want to serve King and Country but don’t fancy being a police officer Greater Manchester Police are recruiting Custody Detention Officers. We very much value the disciplined background & some of our best CDOs are veterans.

An emotional reunion of 3 officers who found Gary living on the streets 6 weeks ago. Chris 2nd from the right served in the same Regt as Gary & Jordan Bancroft (framed picture) who the building is named after. Gary mat his daughter for the 1st time in a year thanks to Healthier Heroes CIC
Met with Northants Police, latest force to join the national policing armed forces network. Already a Defence Employer Gold award holder was really impressed with the monthly recruitment webinar they host for veterans & will be sharing it with the group and our Greater Manchester Police network
Yesterday Greater Manchester Police were at the CTP Northwest recruitment fair one of the most important events for our armed forces network. As well as expressions of interest in joining GMP it was also great to network with the other organisations at the event. #armedforcescovenant
I was delighted to have been invited to HSO today to talk to them about the #armedforcescovenant . Really keen to sign up and support it I shared Greater Manchester Police journey much of which can be replicated by any company. Looking forward to providing continued support.
Sent this by Steve Lowe Op NOVA last week. It shows the number of vulnerable #veterans have been identified by Greater Manchester Police officers and referred to Nova for support since 2018. 2024 data only up to March 14th meaning we’re on target for 500 in 2024 compared to 37 in 2018.
Held our Greater Manchester Police Supporting Our Armed Forces strategic steering group today. Chaired by ACC Sykes, too much fantastic work to mention here but for me the highlight was our recruitment team having developed a route into GMP for veterans with not requiring formal qualifications.
