A call for MEDIA RESPONSIBILITY. Never reward mass killers with the notoriety they seek. Focus on Victims & Heroes, NOT their killers. #1A #NoNotoriety

With breaking news about a shooting coming out of Boulder, CO, in addition to the shootings in Atlanta last week, an important reminder to not glorify perpetrators of mass violence. #NoNotoriety NoNotoriety
@yvonnecsu Dr. Jaclyn Schildkraut 🟧 NoNotoriety “He will, when I speak, be nameless. And to others, I implore you, speak the names of those who were lost rather than the name of the man who took them. He may have sought notoriety, but we in New Zealand will give him nothing, not even his name.” -Jacinda Arden

Just watched #NoNotoriety protocol used in the latest #Colorado mass shooting. I am proud of the work Tom & Caren Teves invested in spearheading the education of media & public officials. I am equally sad that their own tragedy led to their involvement. Thank you my dear friend.
These are the only names we should be saying. Elevate the victims, not their killer. #NoNotoriety NoNotoriety
Meeting NoNotoriety's Tom Teves 5 years after losing a family friend in a CT mass shooting changed everything I thought I knew about reporting and teaching journalism ethics. Now, again, in Boulder, too many gone too soon. Avoid the spectacle. Focus on these lives instead.
Some excellent advice from NoNotoriety about not glorifying, publishing shooters-- nonotoriety.com This is #peacejournalism !!
@drmichaelgold NoNotoriety His name and photo don’t tell the story - the facts do. A 21-year-old male entered a supermarket and opened fire, killing 10. There’s the story, without his name. They can then report motivation, precursor behavior, etc. and give all info needed to understand without the name.
"One key factor we’ve found in mass shootings is that the perpetrators study other mass shooters for models of behavior, which is why such tragedies tend to cluster as they did this week." Greatly informative piece by @theviolencepro in the Los Angeles Times. latimes.com/opinion/story/…
"When you see any media organization - print, digital, television, or radio - gratuitously using the names & images of shooters, stop watching, stop listening, stop clicking, stop liking, and stop sharing." - Tom Teves, NoNotoriety ow.ly/wX3R50E6F1F
The New York Times thank you for following NoNotoriety media guidelines here.
Exhibit A of why you don’t glamorize mass shooters. Barely 48 hours since #Boulder and there was almost a repeat attack. Contagion is real and so are the consequences of the news coverage. Report the facts, deny the fame. #NoNotoriety Shannon Watts March For Our Lives NoNotoriety
Beautiful tribute to lives stolen in #BoulderColorado tragedy on #worldnewstonight David Muir Continue to keep the focus on the victims, not their killer. #NoNotoriety
“Blaming mass shootings exclusively on serious mental illness stigmatizes the millions of Americans who are affected by such conditions — the vast bulk of whom don't commit acts of violence.” Thanks, Jillian Peterson & James Densley, for your research+sharing No Notoriety protocol.
