whenever some tech person says “the metaverse” please remember that the term was coined by Neal Stephenson in 1992 to describe an exploitative, corporatized, hierarchical space that ultimately kinda sucks newyorker.com/culture/infini…

72% of the unvaccinated said they'd quit after a mandate. In real life, few do. Studies show older people are vulnerable to misinformation and Fox News, and yet almost all are vaccinated. What explains this? My piece of the sociology of the unvaccinated. nytimes.com/2021/10/15/opi…

What does this actually mean? What do they even need "blockchain" for? Does it just mean "we make up shit out of nothing and sell it to you"? Is it meaningfully different from every other game making money from in-game cosmetics? gameinformer.com/2021/11/01/ubi…

Bitcoin mining companies are following the exact trajectory of the fossil fuel industry. They are currently at 'half-hearted greenwashing'. That's just after 'ugly, public realisations' and just before 'give up and be openly harmful again' nytimes.com/2022/03/22/tec…

While amusing, this is pretty common. I can name a number of US UGV and UAV platforms that are similarly controlled with XBox 360 controllers. Turns out, when training 18-20 y/os, using an interface theyre likely proficient with after a decade of gaming gives you a head start.

Minorities and particularly African Americans also led the way in being mis-sold subprime mortgages. This is not a plus point for crypto

My favorite sort-of case of this was Conrad Veidt, a German actor of the 20s and 30s; he wasn't Jewish but he hated the Nazis and he was happy to play evil ones after emigrating (such as, most famously, Major Strasser in Casablanca). His whole story is great.

There is something galling about the literal richest man in the world telling us we have to pay for a service to help pay its bills, after he was the one who saddled it with a billion dollars of debt servicing a year.
