#OnThisDay 1968 the first Royal Navy Polaris missile was fired from HMS RESOLUTION off Cape Kennedy. The missile was in service with the RN until HMS REPULSE was retired in 1996. Polaris had a range of 2,500 miles at speeds of 8,000 MPH and was replaced with the Trident D5.
