Tomorrow, I'll be leading the Carbon City tour for Doors Open Day. We'll explore how the global fossil fuel economy has origins in Glasgow and how in turn oil and coal have both transformed the city. Starting at 11am at the Finnieston Crane. It's free! glasgowdoorsopendays.org.uk/in_person_trai…

Big turnout from Unite, Unison and UCU members at the Glasgow University picket line this morning. It’s time for university bosses to make a decent pay offer.

I finally got round to hanging up photo frames so this wonderful Jim Turnbull cartoon is now proudly above my desk. Keeps me motivated (and amused!) during my 70s and 80s economic history readings.

With all the public transport chat I’m surprised I haven’t seen much discussion about rail lines before and after the Beeching cuts. How different current debates would be if the 1963 lines were still in use.

1/2 Laura visited #ColonsayCommunityDevelopmentCompany this week - they're hard at work building much needed affordable housing for rent (second homes around 40% of housing stock!), renting out woodland crofts, and supplying fuel & coal to the island amongst many other things.

A founding director of Community Land Scotland, and its 1st Chair, David Cameron from Harris, retired from the board of CLS at its AGM. It is worth recording the immense contribution he has made to community land ownership, its development, progress & increasing profile over the years.

Hydro hunting this weekend feat. Clunie power station & the Clunie Memorial Arch, dedicated to those who lost their lives building the tunnel between Loch Tummel & the station, & built to its cross section dimensions. A dangerous job indeed.

A lovely week in York for the Tony Slaven workshop at #EBHSABH2024. The keynote speech from Susie Pak was a dream - discussing forging identities in finance films - and gave me plenty of films to add to my watch list! Thanks again to Chris Corker for organising a great week!

Grangemouth workers make their voice heard. @riyokoshibe and I interviewed Grangemouth oil refinery workers after their bosses announced its closure. Today, we’ve published a Just Transition Commission report about their perspective on closure and a fair future. 🔽 justtransition.scot/publication/th…

A century ago, an embattled minority Labour government managed to pass John Wheatley's housing legislation which led to the building of hundreds of thousands of council houses which many families still call home. We could do with another Housing Act on comparable lines now!

One of the major turning points in modern Scottish economic history happened from the 1950s to the 1970s when the Central Belt went from being a major producer of energy - coal - to becoming highly dependent on consuming imported energy. The opposite happened in the Highlands.

The closure of Grangemouth oil refinery has been described as a litmus test of Scottish and UK government commitments to a 'just transition'. Today's announcement it will close next year, and 400 jobs will go without a plan is a marker of severe failure. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

A great day at the Community Energy Scotland conference in both my Fintry Development Trust capacity and my PhD capacity. Fascinating talks and great opportunities for discussion - it’s given me lots to think about! Big thanks to FDT for enabling me to attend.
