Dr Kate L. Bowerman from UQ Science presented her findings on the microbiome of Australian marsupials. The bacterial community for each marsupial is significantly varied and is also distinct from that of ruminants.

The extreme environments session of #AusME2024 has kicked off! Did you know that caves can breathe? The exchange of gases from the surface occurs in a cyclic fashion which can help support the life of microbes. @Sean_K_Bay, what an exciting talk!

Tess Hutchinson thank you for giving an insightful talk on the potential thermal flexibility of trace gas oxidation processes from Antarctic samples. In light of our warming climate, this work may prove invaluable!

The first speaker of our second session is Tess Hutchinson from Monash University Chris Greening who’s telling us about Antarctic soil bacteria and how they can sustain trace gas oxidation across wide temperature ranges 🥶🦠 #MEEM2024

Ever wondered if those butane-oxidizing archaea (lnkd.in/d5Gu3rFH) could run their metabolism in reverse? Carbon dioxide to butane? Well, wonder no more: check out our new paper, now live at Nature Communications nature.com/articles/s4146…

Pre-print 🚨 alert! We used AI protein structure prediction to analyze ~10,000 Borg proteins, revealing potential capsid proteins & viral-like features in these massive elements from methane-eating archaea. Could they be the first archaeal giant viruses? Check it out!
