MPs and Lords have called on the Home Office to act faster to help Afghan families eligible for UK resettlement.

While the UK pledged to accept 20,000 people, just 1,611 arrived via official schemes from 2022-2023. Holly Bancroft reports in The Independent:

We've joined over 250 organizations calling on governments to end arms transfers to Israel and Palestinian armed groups that could be used to violate international humanitarian and human rights law.

The UK government must halt the transfer of offensive weapons to Israel now.

Yes. And let’s not also forget the importance of for the work they do more widely in the region. Crucial lifeline for Gaza, and critical stabiliser for region.

Good to see this from David Lammy - now is the time to support more global cooperation, not less. And important calls on - restoring funding to UNRWA and calling for an independent investigation into the deaths of aid workers are critical and necessary.

This 100%. Thank goodness we have people like Torsten Bell doing the critical thinking. Surprised at the level of effusive expert commentary but without the proper scrutiny.

13 years I’ve been working in conflict zones and I’m rarely left speechless.

How is this not top of every news bulletin?!?

“Among the deceased were allegedly older people, women and wounded, while others were found tied with their hands…tied and stripped of their clothes.”

Spot on by Enver Solomon 🧡 - “It [the Rwanda Bill] won’t stop the boats, won’t stop the smuggling gangs, won’t save lives. MPs passed a bill that will lead to more death and suffering.”

Hours after the Rwanda Bill passed, 5 people have died trying to cross the Channel.

Instead of ineffective deterrence policies, the government should focus on safe routes & improving our asylum system. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy.

'Sending refugees to Rwanda, or anywhere else, will never be an effective solution.'

Absolutely - great to see Lisa Nandy pushing the Govt on this. The report is clear and the UK should follow its allies in resuming funding to UNRWA immediately.

The full report of the independent review into @unrwa - can be read here. As I predicted nothing in this shows an organisation in crisis or in bed with Hamas. It is a huge UN agency operating in multiple conflict zones, with a protracted funding crisis. un.org/sites/un2.un.o…

Important reading to add to your list today. The analysis of David Lammy & Labour’s foreign policy vision of the UK’s place in the world and how it intends to use ‘progressive realism’ to deliver for 🇬🇧 & respond to global challenges.

“He may also have felt more confident about doing so less than a week after Israel blew up the Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing sixteen people. At the UN Security Council the next day, the Ecuadorian representative denounced Israel for violating the Vienna Convention.”

Astonishing 👇. The foreign aid budget for developing countries is now being spent mainly WITHIN the UK.

Key reason? Soaring Home Office costs and an asylum crisis concocted primarily by the Government.
