I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up until 35. That's when I discovered Tableau.💡 Seeing what the right tool could unleash turned a job into a passionate career in data analysis.

I love driving my teen batty. While he made fudge, I looked up the calories & that's all it took. Then the debate on whether exact or rounded has more impact. Which version hits home for you?

Data is so valuable. I implemented time-blocking with a day of week component for 5 weeks. Tracking this showed me I will not be doing deep work before work on Thursdays.

I challenge you to call anyone you're creating for a customer. Not a user. Not an audience. Internal. External. Doesn't matter. Watch what happens before you hit publish with that in mind.

Timeboxing for the win! I set a goal/boundary on a presentation I was tweaking at this point. Closed the work laptop at 5 & fought the urge for 'just another 30 min'.

I create dashboards for a living (kinda). Wanna know what makes my dashboards 🔥? I know what the goals of my audience are & treat them like customers. Except on Fridays. 🃏

Knowing what is possible is half the battle as an analyst. The same is true of SQL. You can do so much with spreadsheets. You can do even more if you layer in SQL into your toolset.

Red-yellow-green palettes are an assault on the eyes. With all that color your point is buried. But if you insist, at least go red-yellow-blue to help others see it. 1 in 12 men are colorblind.

I've been on 3 interviews where SQL was a requirement but not really when I was in the job. In 1 interview, SQL was never mentioned. In 2 interviews, it was at least brought up. The hiring managers just had an idea that they wanted it. Job hunting is WILD! 🦁

Why learn SQL for data analysis? 1. Integrates with a bajillion other tools 2. Learn 1 tool & others are a breeze 3. Handles large datasets 4. Automation at scale $$$ You’ll qualify for roles that make more than those that don’t need SQL.

Deadlines loom & pressure high? Don't plow right into the data. It's tempting but short-sighted. Common mistakes I see: 1. Overlooking stakeholder involvement: Ask questions! 2. Undervaluing data quality: Don’t skip Exploratory Data Analysis! 3. Vague goals: KPIs for the win!

Analytics Error: Not involving stakeholders from the get-go Leads to crappy project goals & unmet expectations The Fix: Engage early & often! Everyone's aligned & invested in the outcome.

9 times out of 10 what I’m asked to do isn’t what is needed My customers come to me with what they think the problem is, but the heart of the problem is deeper. Better questions or even better conversations is how I discover the TRUE request.

Data analytics projects can feel like an endless loop of revisions & missed deadlines. One minute you're smooth-sailing & the next you're trapped in a never-ending loop of revisions, extensions, and “Just 1 more thing” requests. Today has been one of those days.

Your customers aren't starting where you are at. You've spent days, weeks, or even years embedded in the data. I heard this called the "curse of knowledge" by a pal today, & it was such a great reminder.

Mistakes aren’t free. You spend precious hours & money making them. Protect your ⏳ & 💵 with analytics: 1. Know your goal: Clients initially ask for what doesn't support a goal 2. Act on what you see: Get out of your emotions 3. Interpretation beats information every time

Businesses run on 'gut' feelings too often. A client commented about a strategy based on recent growth. I pull up a dashboard I created for her & no. They're shrinking & need a different strategy. I challenge you to look at your #s before you make your next decision.

Here’s my choice for Texas House 23 - my district. Dev is a pediatrician, has thrived in a rigorous educational and professional environment …. and he sees the voucher scam for what it is. Read on, friends.
