Cork County Council has surveyed more than 2,700 apparently vacant and derelict properties in the hopes of bringing some back into use to address the housing crisis. The Echo revealed recently that 7,000 people were on the council's housing waiting list at the end of 2023.

Uneven footpaths and a lack of dropped kerbs make many parts of Cork city “no-go areas” for people with disabilities. However, Cork City Council defended its maintenance of footpaths in the city, citing historical constraints within the city and an active response to concerns.

Cork City Council said it is working with the owners of 705 vacant or derelict properties across the city. While the news has been welcomed, calls have been made for the council to begin compulsory purchase order proceedings in relation to a number of properties.
