The stunning Burnt-tip Orchid today up on the chalk, still hanging on in dry unimproved and protected grassland. This beautiful little species has declined massively over the last fifty years due to habitat loss and destruction.

A small but noticeable movement of Spotted Flycatchers through the garden over the last week or so. Two seem to be hanging around, I hope it's a pair and they stay put.

Flycatchers looking like they are settling in now and enjoying plenty of flies today in the garden. They can't complain about the food supply anyway.

Greater Butterfly Orchid from a chalkhill grassy gulley. Apparently mainly pollinated by noctuid moths - those that can reach down into that long spur for the nectar that can often be seen through the tube wall.

A extraordinary encounter with this female Marsh Harrier yesterday at Petit Port cliffs while staying with family in Jersey. She landed just a few feet away after causing plenty of panic at the High Tide roost there.

Interesting recent fall of Redpolls on the Dorset coast. My nocmig recorder picked up some passing here (20 miles from the coast) at 05.48 on the morning of the 15th. Just around the time of the morning astronomical twilight.

Impressive numbers of redwings logged again last night (nocmig gear). Continual strong calls throughout the whole night (182 logged) from 6.46pm until I switched off at 6.20am & plenty more faint ones too, relieved only by an occasional restless pheasant & the local tawnies.
