This graph in the new Lewis & Usmani article caught my eye because of its surprising results (countries with ⬆️ police have ⬇️ police killings) and its inconsistent denominators (per population vs. per homicides), so I wanted to replicate it. direct.mit.edu/ajle/article/d…

In retrospect, should have made these crazy graphs the first tweet! A 76 percentage point gap between the grant rate of the strictest and most lenient immigration judge in New York is wild. Motivates the whole paper. Your judge is your destiny when it comes to asylum in the U.S.

I wrote a LSE USAPP blog summarizing my recent Crime and Delinquency paper "Can Community Policing Reduce the Chilling Effect of Immigration Enforcement on Latinx Crime Reporting? Evidence from Los Angeles." Take a peek!

Does cash bail deter misconduct? My colleague, Aurelie Ouss & Megan Stevenson have a new paper that addresses this question. They study a reform in Philly which⬇️the use of cash bail but, critically, not detention. More limited use of cash bail didn't compromise public safety.

So happy to see this work with @la_agustinaAR out in the Journal of Urban Affairs! We find that charters in NYC have small positive effects on traditional public school (TPS) diversity and descriptive evidence that charters increase neighborhood diversity.

Applications due May 5 for this excellent opportunity! Are you a faculty member that works with students traditionally underrepresented in public policy? If so, consider applying!
