It was great to give a presentation on Atlantic #woodlands & associated management for #lichens last month, on behalf of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (Institute of Chartered Foresters). Nearly an hour waxing lyrical about how wonderful lichens are on #Dartmoor.

Pseudocyphellaria intricata is one of the specklebelly #lichens and in England, it is only known from Seathwaite (Borrowdale, #LakeDistrict). It is a wonderful species, confined to high quality #rainforest sites in hyperoceanic areas. #Cumbria

“The reason I love this site, is because it emphasises the conservation importance of #trees outside of #woodlands”. A short peice I pulled together on Lobaria pulmonaria on Dartmoor. Full video: youtu.be/88CCO1iSK80?si…

Tucked away in the Dart Valley (where the Webburn meets the Dart) is a spectacular example of high growth #forest, where two oaks support Fuscopannaria sampaiana. These are the only two trees in England, where the main population resides in western Scotland. #lichens #Dartmoor

Aurora borealis (Northern Lights) dancing around the sky at Woodbury Common, #Devon. What a spectacle she was! Painting the sky every colour of the rainbow, only to increase in intensity throught the night! Go and catch her if you can! #NorthernLights #auroraborealis #exmouth

Great to host friend & colleague Jesse Miller (Jesse Miller @texosporium.bsky.social), exploring one of #Dartmoor’s finest temperate rainforests. Jesse lives in the Pacific North West (America) and is President of California Lichens, so was fascinating to explore similarities and differences within this biome.

An absolute honour & privilege to attend the Borrowdale #Rainforest NNR (#LakeDistrict) launch event today. Felt a little emotional! I have spent a huge amount of time working in this valley, so am delighted for this national designation. itv.com/news/border/20…

So wonderful to have attended the temperate rainforest conference in #Plymouth last week. An overly inspiring day! This was followed by exploring the #lichens in some of our top rainforests in #Devon, led by myself & the British Lichen Society.

Nature amazes me! These colours - my life! Check out the fiery red fruits of Haemoatomma ochroleucum, a bloodstain #lichen. This species is normally encountered sterile, but was putting on a stellar show at this beautiful little churchyard in Shropshire! #nature #lichens

I’m not entirely sure why, but this is a #lichen I rarely encounter. I was delighted to have found it growing in huge abundance on a lime tree in Quarry Park, Shrewsbury! This is the cushion Xanthoria (Xanthoria polycarpa). The lobes are teeny tiny & has heaps of fruits!

Obligatory selfie with Umbilicaria hirsuta on the Long Mynd (Shropshire Hills), where this is the only site in England to support this species! Kindly acquainted by the Shropshire #Lichen Group on a bright and blustery autumnal afternoon! The population here is mega!

An interesting two days last week, spent with #NaturalEngland studying the #lichens on rocks and trees! Churchyards are sanctuaries for wildlife and for most cases, very under-recorded. Lots of exciting species at this site!! #churchyards #shropshire

Sundews! Absolutely love ‘em! They are other-worldly & extra-terrestrial. This is round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), a carnivorous little #plant with leaves that have projecting tendrils, tipped with sticky dew - which captures insects as they land. A tasty treat!
