What a lovely morning I spent in the Church in Pembridge yesterday to talk about medieval women and Joan de Geneville, wife of Roger Mortimer. Perfect atmosphere (Joan and Roger were married there 1301). Perfect audience. The sun shone. And we had medieval dancers!

#onthisday 21st May 1471 the death of the ill-fated King Henry VI in the Tower of London on the same night that King Edward IV returned to London with Margaret of Anjou as his prisoner after the Battle of Tewkesbury. Henry's death was not a coincidence.

#onthisday 20th May 1364 was born Sir Henry Percy, known as Hotspur, at Alnwick Castle. An ambitious and charismatic heir to the Earl of Northumberland who was to meet his death at the Battle of Shrewsbury against King Henry IV in 1403. Dramatic statue in Alnwick Castle.

Memories of a sunny spring morning at Leeds Castle a few years ago to talk about Joanne of Navarre, wife of King Henry IV.
Her experience of captivity there for witchcraft would not have been as pleasurable as my stay in their lovely accommodation.
