She was an active participant in the 2022 pediatric acute disease quality initiative (pADQI) pADQI collaborative for improving pediatric AKI and, to the surprise of no one who knows her, was invited to be part of the 2025 ADQI “Innovative Implementation Strategies” subgroup.

pADQI This very week she has not one but TWO invited presentations at American Society of Nephrology #kidneyweek2024 on bridging gaps on pediatric AKI and mixing and matching technology in critically ill children. Congrats Theresa!

An exciting new paper showing elevated uric acid in severe malaria predicts short- and long-term mortality and cognitive deficits in survivors. Potential new biomarker and pathway for intervention. nature.com/articles/s4159…

We have increased production of uric acid from hemolysis and decreased uric acid excretion with acute kidney injury. The result? Increased uric acid spillover in the gut, expansion of pathobionts, and increased post-discharge mortality.

The importance of this pathway is further supported by the identification of genetic variants in GLUT9 associated with increased uric acid excretion in African populations, suggesting selection pressure. Excited to see where this leads next!
