This morning, WAMU 88.5 management informed us they are laying off 15 vital people from our organization. These individuals are the lifeblood of our journalism. Our hearts are broken. We can’t believe we are losing our colleagues and friends.

I’ve been laid off from my job covering criminal justice at WAMU 88.5/ DCist. Thank you to all of the DMV residents who trusted me with your stories. It was an honor and I felt like I was just getting started. Please support my colleagues at WeMakeWAMU is a union

It's with a heavy heart that I have to share that my 13 years at WAMU and DCist as a web producer, audience editor and most recently growth editor came to an end today. More than a dozen dedicated, talented colleagues were let go as well.

I can think of nothing more poetic than the final story being published on DCist being one that Jacob Fenston begrudgingly wrote about pandas. Love to all my colleagues. DCist forever.

Listeners waking up this morning won’t hear the voices of our colleagues that WAMU 88.5 management unceremoniously laid off on Friday. Readers won’t get to click over to DCist and see their work — or anyone’s work, since the site has been taken away from our community. 🧵

Rebecca Cooper has a wealth of knowledge about the local arts/food scene. She commissioned & edited some of DCist’s greatest work including recent features on H Street & the DC Arts Commission. Plus, she's a DCist OG and worked for the site in its early blogging days.

.Chris Chester was our growth editor. He is among the longest-serving staff members, and his knowledge of DCist/WAMU is without parallel. He handled analytics and social engagement — no one knew how to get our work in front of readers’ eyes like he did.

.Abbey Monsour was our audience producer. How did our Instagram and newsletter balloon in recent times? Well in part thanks to her. She has a knack for knowing what resonates with our DCist/WAMU audiences and our journalism had a greater impact because of it.

There is only one local story featured at the top of the the wamu.org home page right now, and it was written by a reporter who was laid off last week.

🧵 When DCist was shut down, we watched as so many of you mourned the loss of a vital local news source. A team of us got to thinking: What if we could create an outlet controlled by us (the journalists) and you (our community)? No executives involved.
