Similar to an ecosystem (network of people, organizations, opportunities, activity, etc), Communities (networks of people) inherently exist. But their existence says nothing of their health or robustness Both ecosystems and communities must be cultivated - not started

Respectable thing to say: “I like Silicon Valley because people often propose world-changing visions of the future” Ridiculous thing to say:

While partially true, there’s a real aspect of emergence in sufficiently developed communities (and ecosystems) When strong enough, nodes beyond the original cultivators begin to generate activity & opportunities that grow & strengthen the community in a decentralized manner

Fresh perspective on failure and entrepreneurship Imo, before you start to use other’s resources, you should have de-risked your venture as thoroughly as possible Failure should not be worn with honor if it involved hefty losses of resources but could have been prevented

Ecosystem builders, take note! Also new feature idea for the next generation EcoMap. Can’t wait to share more about it soon 🤫

As someone who likes being alone, people ask why I'm so noisy about the loneliness epidemic Bc it's devastating our mental & physical health, while unraveling the communal ties that underly economic & civic life Online community won't solve it... we need more IRL relationships

Starline is incredibly impressive So many applications for uses where remote meetings are subpar (reconnecting with friends) to untenable (diplomatic meetings) Mass adoption ofc will depend on price, so the real innovation will be how low can they reasonably get it

Hot take, Bay Area talent from any company later than Series A is not good talent for most startups The excessive comp packages, high staff count resulting in diminished per person responsibilities, & the air of superiority (esp in engineers) is unfortunately not a trope

Work is vastly more fast-paced & high-stakes now than it was a year ago, but it's infinitely more enjoyable because I'm now deeply engaged in community both within & outside of our company I think we *really* underestimate the power of being embedded in real-life communities

Not gonna lie a 10 year dream of mine is to get all of the ghost signs on Howard street refurbished They are so beautiful & an integral part of city history that warrant the same protection we afford the buildings themselves

It’s interesting that the people with the strongest opinions on remote vs in-office work have never actually run a company (or led a high-performing team, for that matter) and as such have an incredibly narrow understanding of the actual decision that is being made

would be fun to have a yc-cloneathon where we try to recreate as many gpt wrapper startups from the last couple batches as possible within 24 hours

I don’t talk about this phenomena a lot bc it’s hard to back up with data but Different tech ecosystems absolutely have different personalities & some of them absolutely hold the ecosystem back Gatekeeping, one-upping, self-importance… it spills over from people to network
