Granted, my interest in surviving sixteenth- and seventeenth century material culture around northern Scottish firthsides will probably always be a niche one, but it doesn't seem to be waning. #EarlyModern

Ballone Castle today, looking out across the Moray Firth from the Tarbat peninsula. It passed between the Dunbars of Tarbat and Munros of Meikle Tarrel before Sir Rorie MacKenzie of Coigach acquired it in 1623. The MacKenzies made substantial additions to it in subsequent years.
