Where did all the fireflies glow?

We hear it in our comments - hey, why don't I see that many lightning bugs anymore? The simple answer is, because there aren't as many as there used to be. But why? Before we answer that, you need to know how this beetle starts out life. 🧵

One of the remaining regional USDA poultry processors quit doing turkeys for farmers this year.

We’ve got lots of calls for turkey processing.

It’s sad where we had to quote per bird processing prices planning on our employees being in overtime.

I can see why they quit!!

Yeah they say to break down your cardboard boxes before recycling, but *why* does it really matter?

The answer is not so it gives you more room in your bin/is a more efficient use of space.

It comes down to how our recycling system sorts different kinds of materials.

Know your farmer. Locally raised, pastured beef is better for the animal, farmer, environment, economy. Eat less but better, local beef.

We posted this news article as a social story a couple of days ago and received many direct messages in response. It’s clear this needs discussing.

'Over 44M Americans rely on SNAP to combat hunger. Yet some members of Congress are proposing cutting the program. In South Carolina alone, [the state] would suffer $400 million in cuts. That would be devastating for families like mine.'

Please take tomorrow seriously.

If you have relatives without a basement, invite them over for dinner, game night and perhaps a sleepover.

Look out for one another if you're in the risk area.

Schedule your afternoon/night to be able to access shelter at a moment's notice.

An experiment with 25 hybrid hazelnuts from Wisconsin. In theory they have the blight resistance from American varieties but the larger nut sizes from European varieties (which you see in the store and can't be grown in the US except for Oregon). Very curious to see what they do

Maria shared this pic from Watsonville CAs strawberry fields: It's the beginning of the season so I'm working hourly but in peak season I'll work per box and if I rush I can earn more. It's hard to work crouched all day but that's how I earn a living.

Where we’re at with the farm bill – and why the key to getting that done always comes down to nutrition – not farm – policy.

I applaud Dept. of Agriculture for spearheading United Nations's declaration that 2026 will be the International Year of the Woman Farmer. Woman farmers and ranchers play a pivotal role in United States agriculture and producing the food and fiber to feed and clothe the world.
