Middle age man with osteoarthritis and a 2 cm intra-articular soft tissue mass of the knee. Clinical impression is lipoma. CD34 was focally positive. I'm having trouble precisely classifying this lesion (considered myxoid SCL with chondroid metaplasia). Thoughts? #bstpath

My impression is that is highly sensitive and specific for the BRAF V600E mutation. Other BRAF V600 mutations stain negatively. I once saw equivocal staining with it in a BRAF V600R-mutant melanoma in a cytology preparation:

After 9 years of training, a pathologist in 2024 will get paid $35.36 to diagnose a person’s cancer, compared to $45 in 2000. That is a 45% decrease in inflation-adjusted income. 0.006% of the US population is trained to do this job. When do we say enough is enough?
